29 - Dudley Wood Library Link open now

Archived news release from 2008

The borough’s first Library Link opened its doors to the public for the first time yesterday (Monday July 28).

Dudley Wood Library Link is based at the Dudley Wood Neighbourhood Learning Centre, Pavilion Gardens, and is a new way for Dudley Council to deliver library services to the local community.

Visitors to the link can borrow books as well as use computers and the internet. They can also reserve talking books, CDs and DVDs online and have them delivered to the link the following day.

The link is open during the neighbourhood learning centre’s opening hours, which are Monday to Thursday from 9am to 5pm and Friday from 9am to 4.30pm.

A member of the library staff will be available on Mondays and Thursdays from 9am to 11am, Tuesdays from 3pm to 5pm, Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm and Fridays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.  Outside these hours visitors to the link will still be able to have assistance, if required, from staff in the neighbourhood learning centre.

The link has more than 1,500 books, a reading area and self service facilities, which is another first for the borough.  The self service kiosk uses the latest technology and is the new way for people to borrow, renew and return books in Dudley Wood.

Regular activities will take place at the link, the first being a poetry workshop by Tom Flemons on Friday August 8 from 1.30 to 3.30pm.  The workshop will be based on a sports theme for families of all ages to celebrate this year’s summer reading challenge theme, Team Read, which celebrates the Beijing Olympics 2008.

Dudley Wood’s already established reading group for adults and the chatter books reading group for younger readers will take place in the library link along with rattle and rhyme. There are also plans for a new homework club.
To find out more about activities at the link call 01384 815560.

Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member responsible for libraries, said:
Dudley Council is delighted the borough’s first library link is now open to the public.  I hope local people take the time to visit the link and make the most of what is has to offer right on their doorstep.”

Dudley Wood Library Link has replaced the existing library on Bush Road, which closed on Saturday July 26.  Access to the link’s main car park is off Dudley Wood Road.

Library Links will also be introduced in Woodside and Quarry Bank before the end of the year.
