2 - Dudley youngsters harp on to success

A group of young harpists from Dudley have won two top music awards.

Dudley Harp Group took part in the Leamington Spa competitive festival last weekend and won both the Harps galore shield and the Marie Goosens Memorial Cup.

The group’s ten members are aged from seven to 16 and are directed by Dudley Performing Arts (DPA) harp teacher Helen Barley.  They played their way to the top beating 17 other harp groups from across the country.  The adjudicator for the competition, Eleanor Hudson commended their performance and ensemble playing.

In addition, Francesca Newey, aged 7, won the Clive Morley Cup for
the best beginner.

The group will perform again this weekend on July 5 and 6 at the Dudley Performing Arts Summer Festival at Himley Hall.

This year’s festival is FREE entry to 16’s and under for the Saturday and Sunday events. All other tickets cost £5 (£4 concessions) and are available in advance from Dudley Box Office on 01384 812812. The full programme of events is available on www.dudley.gov.uk/dpa

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services said:

“I would like to congratulate the Dudley Harp Group on winning their awards.  They have shown that they can compete with the best performers in the country at their age and I am sure they will continue to carry on their success.”
