3 - Flood advice leaflet

People in Dudley can now pick up safety advice on how best to cope if they are caught up in floods.

One year on from the severe floods last summer which cost lives and caused devastation to homes and businesses across the country, Dudley Council has produced a flood safety leaflet, to provide residents with advice on how to prepare for and respond to severe weather conditions.

The release of the leaflet coincides with the publication of the government’s report into last year’s floods by Sir Michael Pitt. The report has highlighted the need to be better prepared for floods and that local authorities should play a major role in the management of local flood risk, taking the lead in tackling local problems of flooding and co-ordinating all relevant agencies.

The free leaflets are available from Dudley Council Plus and borough libraries. It is also available at Russells Hall Hospital in the accident and emergency and outpatients departments and at The Guest Hospital and Corbett Hospital.

The leaflet includes information on action to take when floods are forecast and how to cope after floods have struck.  It also has information on insurance cover, clean up considerations and useful contact numbers.

Residents living near rivers which are likely to flood are also encouraged to sign up to the Environment Agency’s Flood Warning System.

Councillor David Caunt, leader of the council, said:

“While the risk of floods may not always be high on the agenda in Dudley, it is important we know how to react to all severe weather conditions. This leaflet offers people simple steps that can be taken to ensure we are prepared to cope before, during and after a flood.”

To pick up a copy of the leaflet visit Dudley Council Plus, borough libraries, Russells Hall, The Guest or Corbett Hospital or call the council’s contingency and disaster management team on 01384 811552.
