Cherry Tree Learning Centre will be officially opened on Thursday (tomorrow) by blind marathon runner Dave Heeley.
The learning centre moved to its newly refurbished site in Overfield Road, Dudley in April.
‘Blind Dave’, from West Bromwich, shot to fame in April after becoming the first blind person to run seventh marathons, on seven continents, in just seven days. Only adventurers Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Mike Stroud have ever completed the challenge before.
Cherry Tree Learning Centre is part of Dudley’s Pupil Referral Service and provides for up to 90 primary and secondary age pupils who are unable to attend mainstream schools due to medical and emotional difficulties.
The centre also provides educational support for children at Russells Hall Hospital and home tuition for those too ill to attend the centre. The pupils follow the national curriculum as well as taking part in activities to support their learning.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“The Cherry Tree Learning Centre provides an invaluable service not only for children and young people, but also their parents and carers. I am delighted the centre is being officially opened by Mr Heeley whose achievements are inspirational.”
