18 - Making their voices heard

Three young people from Dudley will be speaking up on behalf of their peers at a major national event.

Members of the Youth Parliament (MYPs) Josh Lewis, Cathy Simms and Nicola Gill will attend the annual sitting of the UK Youth Parliament held in Exeter from tomorrow (SAT) until Tuesday(22).

Four hundred MYPs from all over the UK will attend the event, held at Exeter University, to discuss issues important to them and the young people they represent.

The annual sitting follows from a major event in May when, for the first time, young people were able to take over the House of Lords chamber to debate issues of importance.

MYPs used the opportunity to debate and vote for the UK Youth Parliament’s three national campaigns for the year ahead. After two hours of debate, the following three campaigns were agreed: Your Future, Your World, Your Fight – a recycling/environment campaign, national public transport concession card for people under the age of 18 and the abolition of university tuition fees.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:

“I am delighted that Dudley will be represented so well at this important event. Young people do care about the world around them and have views and opinions which are very relevant.”

Fifteen-year-old Nicola Gill, deputy member of the UK Youth Parliament for Dudley, said:

“We are not old enough to vote on May 1, but this does not mean we shall sit in silence. Young people not only deserve to, but also have the right to have their voices heard.”
