A new chapter has been added to the history of Dudley with the launch of a new book looking back at the borough’s civic past.
Dudley’s little book of big history is crammed full of pictures and information on the hundreds of years since the area first appeared on maps and in books.
Dudley Council has produced the book which includes a look back at the area’s Saxon beginnings and its mention in the Domesday Book. It also chronicles its links with Dudley Castle and the building of the council house.
The symbolism behind the civic coat of arms and the role of the Mayor also feature in the booklet.
Councillor Ray Burston, Mayor of Dudley, said:
“Hopefully people will pick up a copy and enjoy the rich history this borough has to offer.
“We especially want to get the young people involved so they can see how the borough is made up of layers of stories and people from the past.”
Pupils from Bishop Milner School, Dudley, got a sneak preview of the new booklet on a tour of the council house on Thursday (July 10). They got to meet the Deputy Mayor of Dudley Councillor Pat Martin and learn about how the council works and the important role of the mayor in the borough.
The booklet will be launched at a special civic reception at the council house, Dudley, on July 16, from 6pm.
It will be distributed to libraries and the archives service at Coseley, and visitors can pick up a copy for free.
