Facilities at a Dudley community centre have been given a boost following an investment of more than £3,000.
Sledmere Community Centre based at School Drive, Sledmere, has been fitted with a new access ramp, furniture, computers and security measures as a result of its modernisation. The revamp has been made possible thanks to a £3,400 government grant from the Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities Fund – Breakthrough Capital.
As part of its relaunch, youth workers and police community support officers are holding activities for the Sledmere and Kates Hill young people at the venue.
The centre will also be base for a new outreach worker, who will be working ten hours a week until christmas. This worker will be responsible for encouraging use of the facilities and to encourage local residents to take part in adult education classes.
It is hoped that volunteers from the local community, will become involved in the management of the centre and that a management committee will be set up in the future.
The council’s community renewal team has been working with the local community and partners to assist with community regeneration in the area.
Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for community renewal, said:
“Sledmere Community Centre is at the heart of the estate, providing residents with a really good facility. It is important that the building is fully utilised and a working committee will be the first step in achieving this.”
