9 - Under-aged drinking found at Halesowen restaurant

A Halesowen restaurant has been banned from holding functions for youngsters after police found beer, alco-pops and cider at the premises during one of the events.

Dudley Council’s licensing and safety committee has prohibited Vakas Balti Restaurant and Takeaway in Windmill Hill, from holding under-18 functions on its premises. The premises are not licensed to sell alcohol.

The restaurant in Colley Gate, Halesowen, does have a licence to provide late night refreshment but will no longer be able to hold the functions following the council’s licensing sub-committee’s decision at its meeting on Tuesday (July 8).

The committee heard how police had visited the premises in April and found a 16th birthday party being held in the upstairs function room. There were 32 unsupervised teenagers, aged from 14 to 16, at the party along with a quantity of beer cans, alco-pops and cider.

Councillor Julian Ryder, chair of licensing committee, said:

“This party of 14 to 16 year-olds were allowed to enter the premises with alcohol purchased elsewhere and had started to consume it when the police arrived.  We regard this lack of supervision as extremely serious and totally irresponsible on the part of the premises licence holder.

“As a result, we have imposed this condition on the licence which will prevent a reoccurrence of this type of incident and require adult supervision of under 18-year-olds.”
