11 - Woman lands £365 court bill for fly-tipping

A woman from Quarry Bank has been given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay more than £360 after admitting to a fly-tipping offence.

Anne Bennet, aged 37, pleaded guilty to fly-tipping when she appeared at Dudley Magistrates Court yesterday (Thur).

The offence took place in Delph Lane Brierley Hill in August last year. The court heard how two residents had reported the fly-tipping and the registration of the vehicle involved.

Dudley Council waste enforcement officers traced the car back to Bennet’s husband and found correspondence to Bennet’s former home address. Bennet admitted the offence, claiming she had paid someone £30 to take her waste for her.

Bennet was given a 12 month conditional discharge. She also had to pay £250 prosecution costs and £115 towards the costs of clearing the waste.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment and culture, said:

“I find it staggering that time and time again we are forced to go down the route of prosecution because people continue to miss the simple message that we are sending out that we will not tolerate fly-tipping offences in Dudley. People really must learn to dispose of their waste in a responsible manner or run the very high risk that they will be caught and end up paying a hefty fine.”
