Schoolchildren across Dudley borough are taking part in a national competition that turns old Yellow Pages into cash prizes.

The contest, which will be rolled out by Dudley Council in June and July, invites schools to collect the old Yellow Pages directories from homes, schools and business so they can be recycled into packaging.

Dudley residents and businesses will receive their new Yellow Pages at the end of this month. As old copies cannot be recycled in the black box scheme they are encouraged to give them to a participating school.

Milking Bank Primary School in Gornal is one of 33 Dudley borough schools taking part. The school collecting the highest number of old directories per pupil will win £300, with runners up collecting prizes of £200 and £100.

For every pound awarded to schools, Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages, will give a matching pound to the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, the Woodland Trust.

Free curriculum-linked resources, created especially for the challenge, are given to every participating school. Kirk, the campaign mascot, features on all the activities to educate pupils about the importance of recycling, woodland conservation and caring for the environment.

An additional art contest, which invites children to create their own pieces of artwork from old directories, will also encourage youngsters to think creatively about recycling with the winning pupil netting £100 for their school.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment and culture, said:

“It’s great that Dudley Council can support the national Yellow Woods Challenge, the youngsters involved are very excited to be taking part.

“I’m sure the children will enjoy recycling old Yellow Pages and it will teach them valuable lessons about protecting our environment.”

Note to Editors

Aylesford Newsprint reprocesses paper collected by Dudley Council’s black box scheme back into new newspapers. They cannot accept old Yellow Pages directories for this process due to the age of ink on the average directory.

The Yellow Woods Challenge is run by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust and more than 100 local authorities across the UK. It aims to recycle old Yellow Pages, save landfill, educate children about the environment and support the Woodland Trust's ‘Tree For All’ tree planting campaign.
