Pupils from Milking Bank Primary School have batted off teams from across Worcestershire to win a place in the regional final of a national cricket competition.
The year six students, aged 10 and 11, will play in the West Midlands regional round of the Asda Kwik Cricket tournament at the renowned Edgbaston Cricket Ground in Birmingham on Friday 4 July.
Having been coached through Dudley Council’s sport and physical activity partnerships and the school’s sport section, the team is hopeful that they can beat off the competing teams who represent Herefordshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Shropshire.
It is the first time a Dudley school, which comes under the Worcestershire cricket district, has reached the West Midlands final. If successful in the next leg they will make it to the national final day, which will be held at Grace Road in Leicester.
Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment and culture said:
“Our sport and physical activity team helped over 40 Dudley borough schools taking part in this year’s tournament, which is 12 more than last year and double the numbers of five years ago.
“I’m delighted that Milking Bank has made it through to the next round and wish them the very best of luck.”
Dudley is appealing for new sponsors to help them finance the borough’s participation next year. If you or your business would like to know more about getting involved please contact Gavin Haynes, head cricket development coach, on 07770 570804.
