Creative children at a Dudley primary school are spreading the healthy eating message across the borough after winning a poster competition.
Pupils at Maidensbridge Primary School created the characters Crazy Carrot, Crusty Colin, Finlay Fish, Chezney Cheese and Chloe Cookie in the competition organised by Dudley Council’s catering and client services team.
Children from across the borough were invited to enter the Balance of good health poster competition which asked them to design five food characters to represent a different food group.
Maidensbridge pupils beat off stiff competition from 19 other primary schools to win the contest and their winning designs will now be used on posters in every primary school to help children make healthier food choices by using the characters as an easy way of reminding them of what they need.
Pupils at Maidensbridge will be presented with certificates, posters, book vouchers, a large interactive game promoting healthy eating and a fruit hamper on Friday (4) during their sports day.
The Balance of good health competition was set up following a drama performance entitled Charlie and the Kitchen Cook based on the health benefits of school meals and healthy packed lunches.
Charlie and the Kitchen Cook is a performance designed for primary school pupils and gives the healthy eating message through songs, dance, humour and audience participation.
Further performances, funded by Health Promoting Schools, are currently taking place.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“Healthy eating is a really key issue for all of our children and young people and I am delighted to see that hard work of Maidensbridge pupils will help other children across the borough learn about good food choices.”
