Children and their families across the borough are being encouraged to have fun but stay safe during national child safety week.
Dudley Council’s road safety and travel awareness team are supporting the week, which runs from June 23 to 29, and this year takes the theme of ‘make a change, make a difference.’
Statistics show that accidents are the second biggest childhood killer in the UK and put more children in hospital than any other cause. The aim of the week is to help prevent deaths and injuries without wrapping children in cotton wool.
A variety of activities will take place across the borough throughout the week.
Children at Huntingtree Primary School in Halesowen will be taking part in Dudley’s cycle training scheme, which teaches children how to cycle safely and promotes the use of bikes.
Other primary schools will be attending the Survive Alive event running at Himley over the next two weeks. Year six pupils will be able to learn about dangers and precautions from a number of organisations including the fire service and the police.
Year seven pupils at the Coseley School and Sports College will be learning about pedestrian safety and travelling in a car through a high-tech interactive quiz. And young children and their parents and carers can visit the road safety stand at Himley Park during the under 5’s day on June 27.
Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation at Dudley Council, said:
“I am pleased to see that so many activities are taking place in the borough to help educate and protect our children.
“In particular, road safety education helps to equip parents and children with the skills and information they need to keep them safe while they are out and about, walking, cycling, using public transport and in the car.”
