Young people across Dudley are today invited to enter an awards scheme dedicated to finding the most talented students in the region.
The launch of the Black Country student awards, part of the Black Country Challenge campaign, covers five categories; new media, writing for the media, science, performing arts and music. To enter, students must complete an exciting task relating to one of these subjects.
Short listed-entrants will be invited to a Black Country-wide ceremony in November where winners will be announced and awarded unique ‘money can’t buy’ prizes donated by sponsors. All participants must currently be in year nine.
This year’s winner of the performing arts category will see their script brought to life by Royal Shakespeare Company actors who will perform a stage
read-through at the ‘Stratford in Summer 2009’ event . This takes place at The Dell, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s outdoor performance space.
Other prizes include a tailor-made music experience package courtesy of Birmingham Conservatoire; two days with film production company Iceni, producing and editing the winners own three-minute film and a day at the National Physical Laboratory, courtesy of SERCO. There is also a full day in the newsroom of the country’s largest regional evening newspaper, Express and Star, with the chance to see the winner’s work considered for publication.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“It is important we celebrate the talents of our young people. I would encourage all year nine students to take part in the Black Country Challenge student awards. This is an opportunity for them to be creative and have the chance of winning some wonderful prizes”.
Year nine students have until 30 September to submit entries. Entry packs have been sent to schools and can be downloaded from www.theblackcountrychallenge.co.uk .
