The search is on for the region’s best breakdancers in a new competition at this year’s Dudley Performing Arts summer festival.
This year the new DJ tent will host the competition on Friday 4 July as part of Rock the Castle, which launches the weekend’s activities.
Individuals and groups of breakdancers can enter the competition in either the under-14s category from 5 - 6pm or the over-14s category from 7 - 8pm. Three professional breakdancers will judge the contests: B-Boy JusPaul, B-Boy Sketch and B-Boy Silence.
In the DJ tent the professionals will be teaching new skills to budding breakdancers and performing demonstrations throughout the evening. There will also be an opportunity for people of all ages to try their hand at DJ-ing.
The competition can be entered by phoning Dudley Performing Arts on 01384 813904 or emailing hayley.duffield@dudley.gov.uk. Details must be registered in order to compete on the night and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
During the rest of the weekend (Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 July) there will be performances from theatre groups, dance organisations, school music groups, massed choirs, singers, soloists, acoustic acts, drummers, orchestras and bands and much more.
This year’s festival is free to those aged 16 and under for the Saturday and Sunday events. All tickets cost £5 (£4 concessions) including Rock the Castle and are available in advance from Dudley Box Office on 01384 812812.
Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services said:
“The breakdance competition is a first for the Dudley Performing Arts festival and I am sure it will be extremely popular. At the festival there is something for all tastes and young people from across the borough get a great opportunity to show off their talents.
“I wish everyone taking part in the event every success.”
