Dudley Domestic Abuse Forum has issued a warning ahead of the Euro 2008 about the likelihood of increased domestic abuse incidents.
Domestic abuse happens daily, but certain events, which involve increased alcohol consumption such as major football competitions cause a considerable increase in domestic abuse incidents. People stay longer in the pub and consume more alcohol than normal.
Men and women can both experience domestic abuse and it accounts for one quarter of all violent crime. It is reported that more than three million children each year witness violence in the home. Domestic abuse is a crime and there is support available.
Councillor Anne Millward, cabinet member for community safety at Dudley Council said:
“It is important for people who experience domestic abuse to know they do not have to suffer in silence as there is support available. Domestic abuse is a crime and there is no excuse for it. The first step to stopping the perpetrator of this crime is to make contact with people who are ready to help.”
“Whilst this competition does not involve our home nations it will still attract interest from a variety of football fans. In addition we do live in a diverse community and some individuals will be following their particular teams. Domestic Abuse is unacceptable to all communities and the Police will take a positive stance in all reported cases”.
