25 - Interactive service to help residents park smart

Residents will be able to check out parking restrictions in all corners of the borough, before leaving home, with the launch of a new interactive service.

Dudley Council has created and launched the map-based software on its website, which contains all restrictions, such as double yellow lines and limited parking, existing on our roads.

People will be able to see what restrictions exist at the touch of a button. The website looks set to prove an invaluable source of information for anyone visiting a part of the borough for the first time. It can be visited at http://gismo.dudley.gov.uk/public/traffic/default.asp.

The site has been launched ahead of Dudley Council taking responsibility for parking enforcement from the police on July 7.

Through civil parking enforcement the council aims to tackle the congestion caused by illegal and inconsiderate parking and keep traffic on the borough‘s roads flowing.

It wants to encourage sensible parking to keep our towns safer for pedestrians and motorists, improve access for public transport, cyclists and emergency services, reduce pollution and improve air quality.

Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:

“This new site will provide a great source of information to motorists about where they can and can’t park across the borough. We want to ensure residents have all the information they need to park considerately and sensibly wherever they go.

While the responsibility for enforcement is transferring to the council, the existing restrictions on our roads will remain the same. These restrictions are in place for a variety of reasons, including for the safety of pedestrians and motorists and to ensure traffic keeps moving.

“Through civil parking enforcement the council will be able to tackle the illegal and inconsiderate parking which can so often bring our towns to a standstill.

“If you are a driver who parks responsibly you will not be affected by the change.”

The transfer of responsibility will free police to concentrate on and direct resources to criminal matters.

Revenue from any on-street fines will be ring-fenced and ploughed back into traffic and road safety schemes.
