Borough residents can see a range of wildlife from holly blue butterflies through to mute swans and Exmoor ponies during walks this summer.
On Tuesday 15 July from 10 to 11.30am there’s a chance to learn more about the small herd of Exmoor ponies who joined the Murray Grey cattle on Netherton Hill. Walkers will find out about the hardy breed and why they are so useful for conservation grazing. There are only 12 places available on this special walk and no dogs are allowed. Meanwhile Wrens Nest National Nature reserve is holding a special flower and butterfly walk on Wednesday 16 July from 2 to 4pm. This summer walk takes a look at the typical summer flowers found in the quarry including betony, small scabious and milkwort. If the weather is warm then indigenous butterflies like peacocks, meadow browns and holly blues should also be enjoying the sunshine. This walk involves steep slopes and meets at Mons Hill College car park, Wrens Hill Road, Dudley. Booking again is essential on 01384 812785.
Later on Wednesday 16July from 9 to 11pm there’s a chance to see nocturnal wildlife with a walk devoted to moths and bats. Walkers will be able to see and hear bats as they hunt for their evening meal. The walk leader will be setting harmless moth traps and using bat detectors to help spot these elusive creatures. Participants should meet at Stourbridge College Horticultural unit at The Leasowes, off Manor Lane, Halesowen. Booking is essential on 01384 814642.
On Thursday 17 July at Fens Pool there’s a wildlife walk from 10am to 12.30pm. The large pools have resident populations of mute swan, great crested grebe and other water birds. The surrounding grassland and scrub is home to wild flowers, butterflies and dragonflies. This walk meets at the wardens base on the Dell Stadium, junction Bryce Road and Pensnett Road.
