5 - Mayor of Dudley kicks off football tournament

Young footballers netted trophies from the Mayor of Dudley at a top tournament.

Councillor Ray Burston was invited to Kewford Eagles Football Club in Kingswinford for a national five-a-side tournament.

The borough’s first citizen got to see teams of budding young football talent battle it out for the prizes in the competition, which takes place every year. It features teams from across the country.

Couuncillor Ray Burston, Mayor of Dudley, said:

“Kewford Eagles is one of the Black Country's most outstanding community football clubs, offering young people from Kingswinford and Wall Heath the opportunity to play the game and to pit their skills against other youth teams.

“It was a real privilege to have been invited to present the awards at their annual summer tournament. What a fantastic day out.”

The tournament, which took place at Kewford’s ground on Saturday and Sunday (May 31 and June 1) featured teams from as far away as Cheshire and included teams of boys and girls.

Colin Worthington, club chairman, said:

“The weekend was a tremendous success. We are lucky at Kewford to have a group of such energetic and enthusiastic volunteers, without them an event of this size would not be possible.”
