25 - Mayor of Dudley tests his fire safety skills

Borough youngsters pitted their wits about fire safety at the Dudley heat of the West Midlands Fire Service schools’ fire safety quiz 2008.

The event, attended by the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Ray Burston, was held on June 19 at Burton Road community fire station, where four borough schools had to battle it out for first place.

It proved a huge success for The Ridge Primary School, Stourbridge, who are now going forward to the Brigade Grand Final on July 15, at the Brigade Training Centre after coming top.   Roberts Primary School, Lower Gornal, came second, while Maidensbridge Primary and Tenterfields Primary also made it through to the final.

The fire service took the opportunity to provide all year five students with booklets about the dangers of fire prior to the quiz taking place.  In total 38 of the borough’s schools took part in the two week event and were entered into heats according to their township.

Councillor Ray Burston, Mayor of Dudley, said:
“It was a tremendous honour to be able to join the top four Year 5 teams for the Dudley borough heat of the West Midlands Fire Service School Quiz.  It was thrilling to witness the passion and excitement with which they battled for the coveted trophy, along with a place in the West Midlands finals.  Well done to the winners – the Ridge Primary School from Stourbridge.”

Chief Fire Officer, Frank Sheedhan, said:
“The Schools’ Fire Safety Quiz is a fantastic event that gets bigger and better every year.  Not only is it great fun, it also allows us to get across some very important safety messages to young people.”
