Dudley Council’s falls service will be out and about this month to offer advice to older people to help prevent them from falling and injuring themselves.
To mark National Falls Awareness Day (June 24), the Dudley Falls Service will be talking to people aged 65 years or over about ways to reduce the risk of falling.
The team of advisors will be at the following venues on the dates shown below:
Tuesday June 24 Dudley Market Place
Wednesday June 25 Wilkinson’s superstore, Halesowen
Thursday June 26 Rye Market, Stourbridge
Friday June 27 Co-op supermarket, Sedgley
Advisors will suggest a number of ways to reduce the risk of falling, including carrying out strength and balance exercises and ensuring the correct shoes and slippers are worn.
Older people will also be encouraged to ensure their eyesight is checked regularly, that their homes are hazard free and that they monitor the amount of alcohol they drink.
Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for adult and community services, said:
“Falls represent the most frequent and serious type of accident in the over 65s. They destroy confidence, increase isolation and reduce independence. The after effects of even the most minor fall can be catastrophic for an older person’s physical and mental health. I would urge people to go along to one of these roadshows to find out how they can reduce the risk of falling.”
