27 - New home for assisted living centre

An equipment and demonstration assessment centre to help local people maintain their independence in their own home has moved to a new, improved location.

Dudley Council’s assisted living centre offers a range of equipment to assist daily living for disabled people of all ages and their carers.

Now based over two floors in a specially adapted house attached to Jack Newell Court in Coseley, the centre provides more space for the assisted living team where they can carry out full demonstrations to show a fuller range of equipment.

There is the opportunity for people to try equipment in realistic everyday settings such as the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom.

Qualified members of staff carry out full assessments to determine what equipment is suitable for a person’s needs.  This could be anything from kitchen aids to help with feeding and cooking, equipment to help people get in and out of bed and a range of items which can help people use their bath safely, plus toilet and shower aids.

Examples of specialist seating are available for people to try as well as equipment to help people get up and downstairs, such as a fully operational stair lift and vertical lift.

Councillor Peter Miller, cabinet member for adult and community services, said:
“The assisted living centre is designed to show equipment which will help people maintain their independence and reduce the likelihood of injury by making life easier in the home for the person and their carer.

“With its new location, the centre can assess people in a more realistic setting and continue to offer them the equipment they need.  We are really proud of this new addition to the range of services we provide for disabled people.”

The new assisted living centre will be officially opened by the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Ray Burston later this summer.

The equipment is free for people who live within the Dudley borough who have been assessed and are eligible.  People can be referred by their GP, social worker or can refer themselves.  To find out more about the centre or to book an appointment call the disabilities section of the occupational therapy team on 01384 813090.
