Queen of culture Pat Wakelam will join local residents at Dudley archives this weekend to celebrate national local history day.
Residents are invited to take part in celebrating the borough’s rich heritage and colourful past this Saturday (June 7) at Dudley archives and local history service, Mount Pleasant Street, Coseley from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
There will be talks from local history experts including Nick Baker from Amblecote History Society on the changing landscape of Amblecote while Michelle Higgs will give an insight into the Black Country’s workhouses. Queen Pat is visiting the event during the morning, taking a tour of the service and meeting visitors, before attending the Duncan Edwards event in Dudley town centre on Saturday afternoon.
There will also be exhibitions, children’s activities including Victorian games and a quiz, a tour of the service, advice about how to research your family history, a free prize draw and refreshments provided by the Friends of Dudley archives and local history service.
Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member responsible for archives, said:
“Dudley’s archives service holds thousand of documents and photographs which hold the key to the borough’s past. I would urge local people to come along to not only discover more about our local history but also to learn more about the service.”
“Residents are also encouraged to bring along a little piece of their history. Old family photographs can be scanned in and added to the archive collection.”
