5 - Seatbelt and safety awareness event at The Brier

A road safety awareness event will be held at a Dudley special school next week to drive home the importance of using seatbelts and booster seats in all vehicles.

The seatbelt and safety awareness event at The Brier School in Kingswinford will be held on Wednesday June 11. Dudley Council’s taxi enforcement officers will be working with the fire service and police to stage the educational event at the school in Bromley Lane.

Officers will speak to parents and taxi drivers picking up youngsters from the school to ensure appropriate seatbelts, wheelchair locks and booster seats are in place in vehicles.

It follows a similar event at Old Park Special School in Dudley yesterday (Wed) which saw 25 vehicles inspected. Of the 25, three vehicles had faulty seatbelts and the drivers were advised on how to ensure their vehicles meet all required standards.

Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:
“The safety of all road users is extremely important and I’m glad to see these events taking place at two of our special schools. The first event was a success and I’m sure more help and advice will be handed out to drivers next week at The Brier School.”

The events follow a similar operation in Dudley recently run by the fire service and police, which saw 83 motorists pulled over for failing to use seatbelts or talking on their mobile phones. The operation was held on April 16 at Castle Hill, Dudley. The motorists caught were shown a presentation from the fire service of the dangers and fatal consequences of not using seatbelts and of using a phone while driving.
