10 - Shop prosecuted for under age cigarette sale

An 11-year-old girl was sold cigarettes in a Dudley shop during an undercover spot check by Dudley Council.

Pensnett Superstore Limited trading as Dhadwalls, High Oak, Pensnett, was caught during a covert test purchase with trading standards officers in April last year.

The business was found guilty of selling cigarettes to a minor at Dudley magistrates court on Thursday (June 5). Two girls, who have carried out test purchases on behalf of the council, gave evidence in court.

The company, represented by one of the directors Shahid Hussain Zaidi, was fined £515 and ordered to pay £1,982.67 costs.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment and culture, said:

“This prosecution and conviction sends out a clear message that selling tobacco to people underage will simply not be tolerated.

“We will continue to protect young people with initiatives like this. We also offer help and advice to all traders on the laws regarding sales of tobacco.”
