War veterans will be in fine voice when they sing along to their favourite songs from the forties at a special event to honour the borough’s heroes.
The annual Veterans Day event takes place at Dudley Concert Hall on June 27.
Singer, Maggie O’Hara will be performing a medley of war time favourites and will be encouraging people at the event to join in. It will include rousing classics such as We’ll Meet Again, White Cliffs of Dover and Land of Hope and Glory. Award-winning pianist Christopher Langdown will also be performing.
The council led event, which will include music and displays, will give veterans an opportunity to meet with old comrades, get information and advice as well as a chance to talk to current servicemen and women.
The Mayor of Dudley Councillor Ray Burston will lead the day, which will include a special presentation ceremony for veterans living in Dudley who haven’t yet been formally presented with their UK Armed Forces Veteran’s Badge.
The event will be further marked in Dudley town centre’s Stone Street Square on Saturday 28 June. Attractions will include: military vehicles, a four piece jazz band and a singer performing 1920s and 1940s music, World War II memorabilia from the Mid 42 group and face painting and balloon modelling for youngsters.
Councillor Ray Burston, the Mayor of Dudley, said:
“This promises to be a very special occasion where veterans can swap stories and catch up with old comrades.
“We hope as many ex-servicemen and women as possible contact us to let us know they will be taking part. I would especially like to see veterans from more recent conflicts such as Northern Ireland, The Falklands, The Gulf, Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan.”
The army recruitment caravan will also be in town on Saturday 28 June. For more information on the town centre event contact Andrea Jones, Dudley town centre manager, on 01384 814659.
