5 - Balloon launch to mark St George’s celebrations

The Mayor of Dudley will get this year’s St George’s celebrations underway by launching hundreds of red and white balloons.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to Sedgley to celebrate England’s patron saint with a festival of fun on April 26.

The popular annual fun day will see hundreds of red and white balloons fill the sky, when the Mayor of Dudley, Councillor David Stanley, officially launches this year’s celebrations.

Councillor David Stanley, Mayor of Dudley, said:

“I always look forward to the annual St George’s celebrations and this year’s promises to be the biggest and best yet. I am particularly pleased we have been able to bring this year’s event to the north of the borough.

“There is something for everyone and we welcome people from all communities who we hope will be joining together to have fun.”

There are a range of activities taking place in the Vicar Street Gardens from 11am-3pm. It will include music, dance and a host of entertainers on the main stage.

Sedgley school children have been involved in the preparation for this year’s events, including the Dormston School who are making a giant dragon, and pupils from Alder Coppice and Queen Victoria schools who will be singing and dancing.

The balloon launch will take place immediately after the parade to officially start the festivities.
