4 - Be a smart parker…and keep the borough moving

Dudley Council will take over parking enforcement from police later this year, in a move to help ease congestion and keep traffic on the borough’s roads moving.

From July 7 the council will become responsible for enforcing on-street parking across the borough, in addition to managing its public car parks.

The existing restrictions on our roads will remain the same following this transfer of responsibility, which will free police to concentrate on and direct resources to criminal matters.

Through civil parking enforcement, the council aims to tackle the congestion caused by illegal and inconsiderate parking which causes problems in our towns, whether you’re driving, cycling, on public transport or on foot.

It wants to encourage sensible and safe parking across the borough. This will make our towns safer for drivers and pedestrians and keep traffic flowing, making them more attractive to businesses and visitors.

It will also improve access for public transport, cyclists and emergency services, reduce pollution and improve air quality.

The service will be managed by the council’s existing parking team. An additional 16 civil enforcement officers will join the current team of ten.

Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:
“Congestion affects everyone - it delays buses, deliveries and emergency services and causes pollution.

“Through civil parking enforcement the council will be able to tackle the illegal and inconsiderate parking which can so often bring our towns to a standstill.

“By reducing congestion we can make our towns not only more attractive, but safer places for motorists and pedestrians.

"While the responsibility for enforcement is transferring from the police to the council, the existing restrictions on our roads remain the same.

"If you are a driver who parks responsibly and legally, you will not be affected by the change."

Revenue from any on-street fines will be ringfenced and ploughed back into traffic and road safety schemes in the borough.
