17 - Computers for pupils at home

Pupils in Dudley schools will receive a laptop computer and internet connection to help with their studies at home after Dudley Council successfully bid for money to fund the initiative.

Around 250 laptop computers will be distributed to the borough’s most deprived pupils after the Easter holidays after the council received funding from the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).  The initial batch of computers will be allocated to identified pupils at Castle, Holly Hall, High Arcal and Hillcrest schools.

Building on this success, Dudley Council is set to receive additional funding for a further 300 laptops. This will mean all eligible secondary school pupils will gain access to a computer and filtered internet connectivity for use at home.  The laptops will be returned to the school for re-allocation when the students leave the school.

Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services, said:
“We are delighted to have been successful in securing this funding. We hope the new equipment will be of great benefit to the pupils to help them with their studies at home.”

The government grants are distributed in accordance with two criteria which look at deprived areas and school meal entitlement.

Dudley Council received £178,500 through the government initiative to fund the initial batch of computers and has now successfully applied for a further £183,000 to fund the additional 300 laptops. These are expected to be received in schools by July ready for the next school year in September.
