28 - Council campaign raises over £10 million

A Dudley Council campaign to increase the take–up of income support and pension credit has led to residents claiming more than an extra £10 million.

In the six years since the campaign started, nearly 5,550 residents have been contacted by the council welfare rights team, with about 80 per cent of those being successful in claiming extra benefits.

From April 2008 single people aged 60 or over are guaranteed a minimum income of £124.05 per week through pension credit, while couples are guaranteed £189.35.

Income and savings are taken into account for both benefits – although certain amounts are ignored.

Those who care for someone in receipt of attendance allowance or disability living allowance (care component) may be entitled to carers allowance, which can increase the amount of income support or pension credit they are due.

Sue Kenney, benefit campaign officer, said

“The campaign is proving to be a success, ensuring everyone entitled to claim is helped to claim.

“We would urge anyone interested in finding out more to contact the council’s campaigns staff as soon as possible.”

Anyone receiving income support or the pension credit guaranteed element is entitled to maximum housing benefit and council tax benefit, free prescriptions, dental care, eye tests, vouchers for glasses and fares for hospital visits. They may also become eligible to access the social fund grants and loan schemes offered by the Department for Work and Pensions.

Information and claim forms are available from 01384 812649, e-mail Sue.Kenney@dudley.gov.uk or write to Dudley Council, Benefits services division, Income support campaign, PO Box 2806. Dudley, DY2 7YS.
