28 - People urged to step up for St George’s tea dance

Dancers are being invited to fox trot along to the St George’s celebrations in Sedgley next month

A tea dance is taking place as part of the patron saint celebrations on April 26.

Dancers will be able to showcase their fancy footwork in the waltz and quickstep and a range of other favourites at the Dormston Centre, Mill Bank, Sedgley, from 1.30pm

It is part of a packed programme of activities including singing, dancing, historic battle re-enactments and displays in Vicar Street Gardens.

Andrew Sparke, chief executive of Dudley Council, said:

“The entertainment at this year’s St George’s celebrations promises to be the biggest and best yet.

“There is something for everyone, so we hope to see as many people as possible there on the day.”

The St George’s celebrations run from 11am-3pm with a host of entertainment including a town crier and a 10ft tall knight helping with the festivities.

Comedy duo Brum and Dudley will be juggling, showing off their acrobatic skills and cracking gags to the hundreds of children and families.

Singer Maggie O’Hara will lead the crowds in a giant singlaong which will include Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

War re-enactment specialists Drudian will be staging realistic mock battles between armour-clad knights armed with swords and shields.
Sedgley Community Association is providing refreshments in the community centre off Ladies Walk.

A range of events will also be held at Sedgley Library, Ladies Walk, including a colouring competition, quiz, baby and toddler rhyme session and poetry.

The Black Country Museum will also be bringing along a mobile parlour, where staff will be on hand to talk to people about how people lived years ago. Sedgley Morris Men will also be performing.

Sedgley school children have been involved in the preparation for event, including the Dormston School who are making a giant dragon, and pupils from Alder Coppice and Queen Victoria schools who will be singing and dancing.

The tea dance is free to attend and includes afternoon tea, but places are limited. To book a place call 01384 815 201.
