12 - Dudley residents urged to stop wasting food

Dudley residents are being urged to shop more carefully as a national report shows the average household could save £420 a year by reducing their food waste.

The report, released by the WRAP (Waste and Resources Action Programme), shows that UK households throw away 6.7 million tons of food every year - a third of all the food we buy.

Dudley Council’s waste team are calling for action from Dudley residents by encouraging them to plan their shopping and think about food storage more carefully.

Here are some top tips to help you reduce waste and save money:

·               When you go shopping take a list with you and stick to the plan
·               Keeping fruit and vegetables in the fridge will make them last longer, with even better
results if the fridge is kept at one to five degrees
·               As we’re all guilty of cooking too much make sure you measure your portions carefully –
an adult sized portion of rice is five level tablespoons
·               Turn your leftover vegetables into a healthy soup
·               Use bread that’s past its best to make a delicious bread and butter pudding

Chris Jenkins, Dudley Council’s waste minimisation and education officer, said:

“Wasted food is responsible for 18 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year in the UK alone.”

“Dudley Council is committed to reducing its waste and we want our residents to do their bit by thinking carefully about the food and packaging they throw away.”

Residents are also encouraged to compost as this turns fruits and vegetable peelings into great fertiliser for the garden. Subsidised bins for 2008 cost £17 for a 220-litre bin and £20 for a 330-litre bin. To order yours visit www.recyclenow.com/compost or call 0845 077 0757 and quote reference HCA2
