A special line up of activities will take place in Dudley town centre on Saturday 7 June to celebrate the life and career of Duncan Edwards.
The event will commemorate the life of the Dudley footballer, who died in the Munich air crash 50 years ago when he was just 21. It will also celebrate talent of local youngsters.
Wolves in the Community will host three soccer skills sessions, each catering for a different age group, in Stone Street Square from 12noon to 2.45pm.
Children aged six to nine can register for the noon to 12.45pm session, 10 to 13 year-olds can take part in the 1 to 1.45pm session and 14 to 16 year-olds can participate in the 2 to 2.45pm session. Places are limited to 25 children per session and anyone wishing to take part needs to register now with parental consent by calling 01384 814659 or 01384 815460.
A full programme of live entertainment including music, singing and dance will take place on stage in Dudley High Street. Throughout the day special guests will talk about Duncan’s life and career as well as the achievements and successes of local young people.
The Mayor of Dudley Councillor Ray Burston will make a presentation of specially produced commemorative medals and will give special ‘Edwards’ football shirts to children taking part in Castle High School’s football tournament.
Dudley Council’s adult learners will be in High Street’s Market Place with a Nintendo Wii, face painting, a caricaturist, health checks and balloon modelling from 11am to 4pm. West Midlands Police will also be there with a special stand where residents can get information on keeping safe.
Dudley tourism officers will hand out information on local places of interest with Dudley Zoo, who will bring along small animals and their popular tiger mascot Jambi. Specially produced embroidered commemorative ‘Edwards’ football shirts will be available to buy from Dudley Market on the day.
The event also coincides with the official launch of the permanent Duncan Edwards and local heroes gallery at Dudley Museum and Art Gallery, which will take place on Friday 6 June. The exhibition will showcase local sporting memorabilia as well as information on local sportsmen and women.
