Anthea Jones prepares for the Duncan Edwards celebration day
The Duncan Edwards celebration day is set to be a big draw as many children have already signed up for the Wolves soccer skills session.
The event, which will celebrate the life and career of the Dudley footballer in Dudley town centre on Saturday 7 June, will also highlight the talent of local youngsters.
Specially produced embroidered commemorative ‘Edwards’ football shirts will be available to buy from Dudley Market on the day. The shirts, which come in red and white, will be sold for £15 each and all proceeds will go to the council’s Castle and Priory youth activity project.
Wolves in the Community will host its three soccer skills sessions, each catering for a different age group, in Stone Street Square from 12noon to 2.45pm. Places are limited to 25 children per session and anyone wishing to take part needs to register now with parental consent by calling 01384 814659 or 01384 815460.
The Mayor of Dudley Councillor Ray Burston will make a presentation of specially produced commemorative medals and 120 of the Edwards t-shirts to children taking part in the Castle High tournament.
Live entertainment including music, singing and dance will take place on stage in Dudley High Street. Throughout the day special guests will talk about Duncan’s life and career as well as the achievements and successes of local young people.
Face painting, a caricaturist, health checks and balloon modelling will be in High Street’s Market Place, between 11am and 4pm along with Dudley Council’s adult learners team who will bring along a Nintendo Wii. West Midlands Police will also be there offering advice to residents on keeping safe.
Dudley tourism officers will hand out information on local places of interest with Dudley Zoo, who will bring along small animals and their popular tiger mascot Jambi.
The event also coincides with the official launch of the permanent Duncan Edwards and local heroes gallery at Dudley Museum and Art Gallery on Friday 6 June. The exhibition will showcase local sporting memorabilia as well as information on local sportsmen and women and will be open all day on Saturday 7 June.
Councillor Ray Burston, Mayor of Dudley, said:
