Borough residents can enjoy the scenery and learn more about their local wildlife and heritage in a series of countryside walks this June.
The Friends of the Environment Zone and the Environment Zone are holding a joint event on Saturday 7 June where visitors can meet the residential beasties. Participants will meet a range of creepy crawlies during the session at Roberts Primary School, Robert Street, Lower Gornal, which runs from 10am to 12noon. Booking is essential on 01384 814170.
Also on Saturday 7 June from 10am to 12noon there’s another of the popular over and under Dudley sessions at Wren’s Nest National Nature Reserve. Participants can explore the mines by boat and later hunt for fossils on the reserve. The event starts at Dudley Canal Trust, Todds End Car Park, off Birmingham New Road, Dudley. Sensible clothing is required. There is a charge for the boat trip; adults £4.75, seniors £4.30, children £3.95, family (two adults and two children) £15.90 (two adults and three children) £19.50. Meanwhile there’s a warden-led butterfly walk on Tuesday 10 June from 10am to 11.30am at Saltwells Nature reserve, Saltwells Lane, Quarry Bank. Only ten places are available and no dogs are allowed. Booking is essential on 01384 812795.
The popular Illey and Lapal walk which starts from The Leasowes is taking place on Wednesday 18 June from 10am to 1pm. Participants can go along and learn about the history of the area. This walk leaves from the wardens base at the Mucklow Hill site. Booking is essential on 01384 814642.
