1 - New school site official opening

A special school in Dudley will be officially opened tomorrow (Friday) following a £1 million revamp.

Rosewood Special School moved into its new state-of-the-art home in Bell Street, Coseley in March.

The school had outgrown its old, dated facility in Overfield Road in Dudley but the larger new accommodation has allowed the school to increase its pupil numbers from 44 to 60.

Dudley Council has invested in refurbishing the new facility which will be officially opened this Friday by a party of delegates, including John Freeman, director of children’s services, Ian Austin MP and Councillor Liz Walker, cabinet member for children’s services.

John Freeman, director for children’s services, said:
“We identified the need through our special educational needs strategy to provide additional places to meet the needs of children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. We are pleased to have found a site which will offer great provision for many years to come.”

Rosewood is also celebrating receiving specialist status for behaviour and the development of a £140,000 vocational centre will be completed at the schools site later this year. The centre, mainly funded through the specialist status trust, will provide vocational courses on jobs in the construction industry, for children with additional needs from across the Dudley borough.
David Kirk, headteacher at Rosewood School, said:
“The school had been based at the old site for many years but the move to these fantastic new facilities couldn’t have gone better. The new school offers state-of-the-art facilities and the children love it. The new environment has helped their creativity and has enabled us to increase the number of children at the school.”
