16 - Warning over roof signs

Drivers of private hire vehicles in the Dudley borough have been warned about the importance of displaying their roof signs at all times.

Dudley Council’s taxis committee has sent out the reminder after 16 drivers appeared before the committee this week for failing to display the signs.

The signs must be shown in accordance with the Local Government Act 1976 and all 16 drivers at Tuesday’s (May 13) hearing were given a final warning.

Councillor Doreen Ameson, chair of the taxis committee, said:

“It is very important for safety reasons that all private hire vehicle drivers obey  these simple rules. This is the most visible way for the public to know for sure that they are getting into a properly licensed and legal private hire vehicle.”

According to the council’s policy all private hire vehicles must display the roof sign approved by the council. The sign should display the name and telephone number of the company and include the words ‘Private Hire Office Bookings Only’. The sign should also be customised by the council with the vehicle registration number and private hire plate number.
