14 - Work starts on £48,000 MUGA at Dudley park

Work gets under way today (Weds) on a £48,000 multi-use games area in a Dudley park.

The scheme to install the new equipment at Buffery Park is being funded through the Liveability scheme and a successful bid by the friends of the park to funding organisation Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd (WREN).

The Friends of Buffery and Grazebrook park drew up a wish list of improvements and worked with the council to create a masterplan for the park after scooping £79,485 through the liveability scheme.

Sally Wright, chair of the friends group, said:

“The Friends of Buffery Park are looking forward to work starting on the new MUGA today. This is another exciting step in the Friends’ masterplan to continue improving facilities for all in the local and wider community.

“We are now looking forward to an active summer, including our now traditional Bike Day event on the 22nd June, which is part of the Community Games. This promises to be as popular as ever.

“We are also looking forward to continuing to improve facilities in the area with the strong support of Dudley Council.”

The latest addition follows on from a number of improvements in recent years. These include a new play area for youngsters, designed to be Disability Discrimination Act compliant so it can be enjoyed by children of all abilities. There is also new seating and bins.

Work on the MUGA is due to be completed by early June.

Rupert Dugdale, head of economic regeneration delivery, said:

“We are delighted the work is getting underway at Buffery Park today.

“By working together the council and the Friends, supported by the Liveability scheme and funding from WREN, are bringing about real improvements to this environment for youngsters in the area.

“I’m certain the new MUGA will provide a great addition to the improvements the park has already seen in recent years.”

John Winslow, regional project manager for WREN added:

“WREN was pleased to be able to support the Friends of Buffery Park and help acknowledge all their hard work and commitment in bringing about some significant improvements to the park.”

WREN is the UK’s largest distributive environmental body and has funded over 4,000 projects across much of the UK with nearly £100 million since 1998.

Projects applying for funding from WREN are assessed by an individual panel of locally based experts for their suitability, sustainability and community benefit.
