How to get involved

National Year of Reading - homepage

There are many ways you can get involved in National Year of Reading 2008.

  • You can set yourself personal goals such as reading one book a month or reading more with your child or joining you local library for free.  To join go to libraries online

  • If you have a love of reading and like to talk about your latest read then why not join an existing reading group at one of the borough's libraries or set up your own reading groups with family, friends or colleagues

  • Encourage people to nominate their top ten books in the organisation where you work or volunteer

  • Share books you've enjoyed with friends, family and colleagues

  • Become a reading volunteer at one of the borough's primary schools, call 01384 814746

Top tips on how to set up a reading group

  • Decide where, when and how often you will meet. It’s important to stick to a venue and time to allow the group to build up

  • Decide how many people you want in the group.  Most groups have a maximum of 20

  • Nominate someone to be the contact for the group and to make it fun give the group a name

  • Decide who will choose the titles you read, will it be a group or individual decision

  • Decide how the books will be discussed.  You will find a natural style depending on your group members but you can ask everyone to speak in turn or keep it informal

  • If you have time at the end fill it by asking group members to share any recommended reads

  • If possible, have a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit!

Remember there are no right or wrong ways of doing this as long as it works for your group and no-one should feel under pressure to finish a book.

Dudley Libraries can supply reading group sets – contact any borough library for more information.
