Stourbridge’s High Street traders have voted against a proposed pilot scheme that would have temporarily closed the street to traffic on Saturdays.
Dudley Council has now decided against running the pedestrianisedpilot scheme.
The proposal was designed to accommodate the fortnightly farmers market, which has to move from its current location near the Crown Centre due to redevelopment work.
The market, officially known as Stourbridge Street Market, will have its last day of trading in the town centre on 20 December. Dudley Council and LSD Promotions, who manage the market, will continue to search for an alternative location in the hope it can reopen in 2009.
Councillor Malcolm Knowles, cabinet member for economic regeneration, said:
“We are disappointed that we didn’t get full support from all the traders for our proposed pilot but we will continue to work with traders and shoppers to look at ways of improving the High Street and boosting trade for the area.
”We will also continue to search for a new home for the valuable farmers market.”
Linda McGillicuddy of LSD Promotions said:
“Our popular market has enjoyed a wonderful six years in Stourbridge and it’s a pity that we currently don’t have another suitable location.
“We will continue to provide markets for special events in the town next year, when the High Street is usually closed to traffic, and will look forward to reopening regular markets as soon as we can secure a suitable location.”
