Dudley Museum and Art Gallery has hosted a special exhibition from local artist Percy Shakespeare as part of a BBC programme.
Work from the Dudley artist, who produced many timeless pieces before sadly dying in World War II, was filmed for an episode of ‘Flog It’ that was recently recorded at Dudley Concert Hall.
The producers of the programme asked the Dudley Council museum to pull the collection together after hearing about Shakespeare’s work.
Mainly containing the artist’s canvas portraits, the collection depicts people who lived in Dudley borough during the early 1940s.
The BBC piece will feature Barbara Jennings, who sat for one of the artist’s paintings as a child, and Robin Shaw, who is related to one of his tutors.
Councilor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment and culture, said:
“It is a great compliment to the area that the BBC wish to feature the work of one of our home grown talents.
“Percy Shakespeare is a source of great inspiration to many artists in the borough and his work is really treasured by us here in Dudley.”
Dudley Museum and Art Gallery, St. James’s Road (entrance at Priory Street), is open Monday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and is closed on Bank Holidays. Admission is free of charge.
