Borough residents will be able to take full advantage of the changing season during a series of walks in October.
There’s a five mile walk along the Limestone Way on Wednesday 22October from 10am to 2pm. The walk links the three limestone ridges of Castle Hill, Wren’s Nest Hill and Hurst Hill. It takes participants along ancient tracks, beside pools and horse grazing pastures to the top of Sedgley Beacon, 230 metres above sea level.
The walk also takes in the 19th Century astronomical observatory tower built by Lord Wrottesley and Beacon Hill Quarry, a site of importance for nature conservation with a diversity of rare plants. Walkers need to take a packed lunch, waterproofs and stout walking boots. This walk is unsuitable for children and booking is essential on 01384 812785. Participants should meet at Priory Ruins in Dudley. The group will catch a bus back from Sedgley to Dudley at the end of the walk and participants should also bring money to cover their own bus fare.
Meanwhile Hunt the Dudley bug takes place on Tuesday 28 October from 10am to 12.30pm. Participants can join the warden at Wrens Nest nature reserve in a fascinating step back in time to when Dudley was under a tropical sea. Participants can look for the fossilised remains of sea lilies, lamp shells, corals and trilobites, and take home any fossils they find. The group meets at Mons Hill College car park, Wren’s Hill Road, Dudley. Booking is essential on 01384 812785.
Children must be accompanied at all events and booking is essential. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear.
