9 - Big Tidy Up success

Archived news release from 2008

A two week blitz on litter in Dudley has been hailed a huge success after more than 100 bags and four skip loads of rubbish was collected.

Dudley Council’s award winning street cleansing team was joined by volunteers from the community over the final two weeks of September to carry out litter-picks as part of the national Big Tidy Up campaign.

Streets and open spaces across the borough were spruced up as the council’s team took part in the national initiative, organised by Keep Britain Tidy. In total 135 bags of waste were collected and four skips were filled with bulky items during the litter blitz.

The clean-ups were carried out by the council in partnership with PCSOs and youth groups in Quarry Bank, a boys brigade group in Wordsley, residents in Worcester Road, Netherton, volunteers from Bridge FM in Stourbridge and pupils from Dormston School in Sedgley.

The council provided the groups with equipment, including litter pickers, gloves and bags and made collections once the litter had been picked and bagged up.

The council’s team also carried out litter picks in Wren’s Nest Road, Dudley, Springfields Road in Brierley Hill, the Kates Hill estate in Dudley and the Lowndes Road and Bradley Road area of Stourbridge.

Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said:
“I’m pleased to see the litter picks were such a success as it’s great to see community involvement in these kinds of schemes. We are very proud of our award winning street cleansing team in Dudley and we’re sure these community litter picks have helped keep our streets and open spaces clean and tidy.”
