17 - Channel your votes for Good Neighbours

Archived news release from 2008

People can nominate for this year’s Good Neighbour Awards from the comfort of their television sets with the launch of an innovative voting system.

For the first time people will be able to vote via Digi TV for the Good Neighbour Awards 2008.

The digital television network allows people to fill in the nomination form using their remote control.

The annual search for good neighbours is now in its fourth year and is looking for the heroes of high rise blocks who go above and beyond in a bid to create thriving communities.

People can already vote by post or on line, but the latest television nominations aim to encourage even more people to get involved.

Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member for housing, said:

“DigiTV has proven very successful so far with thousands of people logging in via their television sets for a range of council services.

“We have already had some fantastic nominations for this year’s awards but we are now hoping for more via DigiTV. People do not even have to leave home to vote.”

Dudley Council and Dudley Federation of Tenants & Residents Association have teamed up with the High Rise Living Forum to run the awards.

Residents are being asked to nominate people they feel deserve this year’s award. It could be someone who does odd jobs such as cooking or shopping for an elderly resident or people who are just generally good neighbours.

The winner and runner-up will be chosen by a judging panel and handed their trophies at an awards evening in December.

Nomination forms have been delivered to residents in high rise blocks across the borough. Forms are also available from neighbourhood offices and Dudley Council Plus. People can also nominate on-line at www.dudley.gov.uk
People with Sky or Virgin or who have a set top box with browser capabilities can vote via DigiTV. To access the site people simply need to press the interactive button on their remote controls and follow the interactive services, through to local services. People fill in the form the same way as texting from a mobile phone. The closing date for entries is November 14.
