Plans to re-name Dudley Southern By-pass Duncan Edwards Way after the town’s football legend, have been given the green light.
The proposals for the busy commuter route have now been agreed and new signs will be installed along the road.
Councillor Ray Burston, Mayor of Dudley, came up with the idea in honour of the famous footballer and formally put the proposal forward to the council.
Councillor Ray Burston, Mayor of Dudley, said:
“I had the privilege of being present at the Duncan Edwards Remembered weekend during the summer as Mayor of Dudley, and ever since I have wanted to do something special to mark the pride this borough has in him.
“We are immensely proud of Duncan Edwards in Dudley and what better way to honour his memory than naming one of the busiest roads in the borough after him.”
The plans have been backed by Duncan’s family and ward councillors. New road signs have been ordered and will be installed later this year.
Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transport, said:
“We are proud to have been able to change the name of such a key road in Dudley to honour Duncan Edwards. It will be seen by millions of motorists every year.”
Duncan Edwards Close, in Dudley, was named after the iconic footballer in the early 1990s, and is close to Dudley Cemetery where he is buried.
