Council tenants in Dudley are being offered the chance to have free smoke alarms in their homes as part of a fire safety intiative.
West Midlands Fire Service is working in partnership with Dudley Council to ensure council tenants are safe in their homes.
While Dudley Council tenants receive their free annual gas service check or a periodic electrical inspection carried out by the authority’s building services contractors, they can take advantage of having a free smoke alarm installed as part of the council’s fire safety initiative.
During the visit, tenants are advised to take advantage of free West Midlands Fire Service safety checks, where a fire service employee assesses all areas of potential accident and fire risk in the home. Tenants will be given valuable advice and information on how to stay safe from fire. This will include advice on kitchen hazards, secure disposal of smoking materials, and the safe use of candles, heaters and electric blankets.
Councillor Michael Evans, cabinet member for housing said:
“Since the inception of the council’s fire safety drive it has organised the fitting of almost 9,000 smoke alarms in tenant’s homes and has referred nearly 3,000 tenants for home safety fire checks.
I would encourage all of our tenants to make use of the home safety fire checks being offered by West Midlands Fire Service. These won’t cost anyone a penny but they could save your life.”
The visits are offered by appointment only. Fire service staff will always attend visits in uniform, with an identity card and will also use an agreed password, if the tenant wishes.
Dudley Council tenants can contact the repairs management centre on 01384 818283, to arrange to have their annual gas servicing or to arrange to have a smoke alarm fitted.
