17 - Free electric blanket testing

Archived news release from 2008

People are being urged to have vital safety checks on their electric blankets ahead of the winter chill.

Dudley Council’s trading standards officers have teamed up with Age Concern Dudley and West Midlands Fire Service for a week of testing from November 3.

Experts say the tests could save lives as last year 45 per cent of blankets checked were found to be unsafe.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for environment and culture, said:

“Having your electric blanket tested could save your life.

“Although they may appear to be working normally, there have been instances where blankets have a hidden, potentially very dangerous fault. I would urge everyone to take advantage of this free testing.”

People are being urged to book appointments with the team who will look for all potential hazards such as faulty wiring or damage to the blankets.

The testing will take place at a variety of venues in Stourbridge, Brierley Hill, Halesowen, Lower Gornal and Dudley. To book an appointment call trading standards from October 20, between 9am and 5pm, on 01384 814668.

The team of experts will also be on hand to offer advice on a range of issues such as home security over a cup of tea and a biscuit.
