17 - Free system for Brierley Hill businesses

Archived news release from 2008

Businesses in Brierley Hill have the chance to sign up to a free text messaging alert system to help them react to emergency situations in the town.

As part of its commitment to warning and informing the public, Dudley Council is encouraging businesses based in Brierley Hill to sign up to a new Evacuation Alert System for Emergencies (EASE).

By signing up to the free system, business owners would receive a text message to inform them of an evacuation or any alternative advice in the event of an emergency.

The system, which is supported by West Midlands Police, was launched earlier this month in Stourbridge and received a warm reaction from traders.

Information about this innovative service is now being sent out to businesses in Brierley Hill. In the unlikely event of an emergency, the emergency services would alert the council’s Contingency and Disaster Management Team who would then send a text message through to the phone number of each business.

Councillor David Caunt, leader of the council, said:
“The new EASE service really is very easy for businesses to sign up to. By letting us know a contact phone number we can give them appropriate information in an emergency situation. I hope businesses in Brierley Hill will follow the lead of those in Stourbridge and sign up to this valuable scheme.”

The EASE system will assist emergency services at the time of an incident as it could help an evacuation take place more effectively and therefore help safeguard the public.

Brierley Hill Acting Sector Inspector Jackie Madden said:
“I hope businesses across Brierley Hill will take advantage of this free service. It will not only keep them informed of events and incidents, but in turn will help ensure the emergency services can carry out our jobs as efficiently as possible.”

The system is already up and running in Stourbridge town centre and following its introduction in Brierley Hill will be made available to businesses in Dudley and Halesowen next month.
