Golden prizes for green champions

Yellow Pages have been turned into cash prizes for a number of Dudley schools that took part in a national recycling competition.

Pupils from 32 Dudley schools collected over 16 tonnes of old directories for the Yellow Woods Challenge, which encourages school children to collect Yellow Pages from homes, schools and business for recycling into packaging.

In a special awards event at Roberts Primary School’s Environment Zone last week, the Mayor of Dudley Councillor Ray Burston praised the children and teachers involved for their hard work.

Mascot Kirk from the Yellow Woods Challenge team also attended the prestigious event and handed awards to the Brier School in Kingswinford, the Cherry Tree Learning Centre in Dudley, Blanford Mere Primary School in Kingswinford and Bramford Primary School in Dudley for their involvement.

A total of £700 has been awarded to the schools that took part. Yellow Pages also gave the same amount to the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity, the Woodland Trust. Seeds to trees kits have also been awarded to the top six schools.

Councillor Ray Burston, the Mayor of Dudley, said:

“It was a delight to meet some of the youngsters who have been involved with the Yellow Wood Challenge.

“Teachers and pupils alike have worked really hard to collect so many copies of the directories for recycling and it’s a great achievement that they collected so much.”

Note to Editors

In the past it hasn’t been possible for Dudley Council to recycle the Yellow Pages directories but due to a change in the way the directory is produced residents can now recycle them through their black box recycling scheme.

The Yellow Woods Challenge is run by Yellow Pages, working with the Woodland Trust and more than 100 local authorities across the UK. It aims to recycle old Yellow Pages, save landfill, educate children about the environment and support the Woodland Trust's ‘Tree For All’ tree planting campaign.

The Brier School in Kingswinford scooped the prestigious ‘Gold Oak’ award and a prize of £300 for recycling over seven directories per pupil - the highest amount in the borough.

The ‘Silver Birch’ award and a prize of £200 went to the Cherry Tree Learning Centre in Dudley while Blandford Mere Primary School in Kingswinford took the ‘Bronze Beech’ certificate and £100 in cash.

In an additional art contest, which invited children to create their own pieces of artwork from Yellow Pages directories, Bramford Primary School won £100 for a sculpture of their school logo.
