3 - Man fined for dropping cigarette end

Archived news release from 2008

A Pensnett man has been fined £150 after he was seen dropping his cigarette butt on the floor in Lye High Street.

Mark Churchill of Chapel Street, Pensnett, was fined by Dudley magistrates yesterday (Thur) for the incident which took place on June 7 this year. Churchill, who failed to attend the court hearing, was seen by a police community support officer, dropping the litter in the road.

The 20-year-old was issued with a fixed penalty fine which he failed to pay. Magistrates fined him £150 and ordered him to pay costs of £250 and a £15 victim surcharge, making a total court bill of £415.

Councillor Karen Shakespeare, cabinet member for the environment and culture, said:
“People should realise by now that dropping any form of litter is not tolerated at all in the Dudley. This is one of many recent prosecutions and I hope it will help get the message home to people that they can not drop litter.”
